ISLAMABAD: Two major urban traffic projects in the federal capital — the T Chowk Flyover and the Shaheen Chowk Underpass — are nearing completion and are expected to open for public use by early December 2025, according to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

The T Chowk Flyover, currently around 60 percent complete, is designed to provide a signal-free route from GT Road into Islamabad, a move aimed at easing one of the city’s most congested entry points. The project, once operational, is expected to significantly cut travel times for commuters entering the capital from the southern corridor.

At the same time, the Shaheen Chowk Underpass project is being executed on an accelerated timeline, with teams reportedly working round the clock to meet the deadline. The underpass is particularly intended to improve traffic flow during peak hours, offering relief to daily commuters, school transport, and residents of nearby sectors.

Traffic congestion has long been a major concern for Islamabad, especially during rush hours and school timings. These two projects form part of a broader government initiative to enhance urban mobility and reduce travel inefficiencies across the capital. Officials believe the completion of these projects will contribute to better traffic management and improved connectivity with adjoining regions such as Rawat and GT Road.

Analysts note that the introduction of a signal-free corridor will not only save time but could also boost economic productivity by reducing delays in goods and workforce movement. Moreover, it underscores the government’s focus on infrastructure upgrades that support both existing residents and expanding suburban populations.
