ISLAMABAD: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has formally commenced construction on the 800-kilometre N-25 Pakistan Expressway in Balochistan, a strategic corridor linking Karachi, Quetta and Chaman. The project, earlier announced by the Prime Minister, is described as a major step toward transforming connectivity and boosting socio-economic development in the country’s largest province.
Chairing a high-level review meeting on Thursday, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan said the N-25 would serve as a “strategic milestone” and a critical component of Pakistan’s national road network. He added that road infrastructure in Balochistan had long remained neglected, and the expressway’s construction marked a “breakthrough” for the province.
The minister also reviewed the progress on other key schemes in Balochistan, including the M-8, which plays a pivotal role in linking the region with Gwadar Port. Officials briefed him on security arrangements and operational challenges faced by NHA teams working across the province.
Turning to Sindh, the minister issued firm directives for the early completion of remaining works on the Lyari Expressway. He said the NHA would upgrade the corridor into a “model highway for Karachi,” featuring improved cleanliness, landscaping, beautification and modern road-user facilities.
Officials informed the meeting that major components — including the toll plaza, road lining and lighting — have already been completed. Abdul Aleem Khan instructed the authority to activate M-Tag services and introduce additional amenities similar to those on the Islamabad–Murree Expressway. He also ordered the NHA Chairman to personally inspect the Lyari Expressway and ensure timely completion.
Calling Lyari Expressway a “valuable gift for Karachi,” the minister said the Prime Minister and Chief Minister Sindh would be invited to inaugurate the upgraded route. The meeting was attended by the Secretary Communications, NHA Chairman and senior officials who briefed the minister on key operational matters.
