Rawalpindi is witnessing accelerated progress on a massive road infrastructure overhaul aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion and improving daily mobility for millions of commuters. Under a comprehensive Rs33 billion investment, the city is being transformed into a signal free urban corridor through a series of flyovers underpasses and redesigned intersections.
The ambitious plan covers key choke points including Kachehri Chowk Jinnah Park Iftikhar Janjua Road Ammar Chowk and Annexe Road. Punjab Highway officials confirmed that construction is progressing on schedule under the Annual Development Programme with several projects nearing critical completion stages during the coming year.
Peshawar Road the busiest artery of Rawalpindi is at the core of the transformation. Three major underpasses at Race Course Ground Army Graveyard Road and Charing Cross are expected to be completed by June next year. Once operational these projects will convert Peshawar Road into a continuous signal free corridor significantly improving connectivity from Ammar Chowk to the motorway entrance at Chungi No 26.
Officials said the Kachehri Chowk underpass and flyover project is targeted for completion by May 31 next year. Alongside this a modern parking plaza costing over Rs1.6 billion is under construction in Jinnah Park while additional parking sites have been identified in Saddar and Cantonment areas to reduce roadside congestion.
Earlier interventions including the GPO Underpass TM Chowk remodeling and the Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road have already improved traffic flow. However traders and residents continue to flag pressure points such as Murree Road and Liaqat Bagh Chowk where congestion remains severe during peak hours.
Despite these concerns authorities believe the scale and coordination of current projects mark a turning point for Rawalpindi. With five major interchanges multiple bridges and underpasses nearing completion the city is poised to shed its gridlock image and emerge as a modern transit friendly urban hub improving economic activity and daily commuting across the region.
