ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority has announced plans to construct a new service road along the Islamabad Expressway from Faizabad to Koral in a major step to reduce traffic congestion on one of the capital’s busiest corridors. The project is part of a broader infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving urban mobility and easing pressure on the main carriageway.
According to CDA officials, the first phase of the project will cover a nine kilometer stretch from Faizabad Interchange to Gulberg Greens. The service road will eventually be extended toward Rawat, creating a continuous parallel route to facilitate smoother traffic flow for daily commuters and commercial transport.
The Islamabad Expressway has witnessed a sharp rise in traffic volume due to rapid urban expansion, new housing societies, and increased commercial activity along the corridor. Areas such as Soan, Pindorian, Shakrial, Garden Town, Khanna, Kangal, Ghouri Town, and Koral are expected to directly benefit from the additional road infrastructure.
Officials said the new service road will provide an alternative route for local traffic, reducing bottlenecks and improving road safety. By separating through traffic from local movement, the project aims to minimize congestion, shorten travel time, and enhance overall commuting efficiency.
The initiative aligns with CDA’s ongoing efforts to modernize Islamabad’s road network and address long standing traffic challenges. Urban planners believe the development is essential to accommodate future growth and prevent further strain on the expressway, which serves as a key link between Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
CDA authorities indicated that work will be carried out in phases to ensure timely completion and minimal disruption to existing traffic. Once completed, the Faizabad to Koral service road is expected to significantly improve connectivity and strengthen Islamabad’s transport infrastructure.
