ISLAMABAD: Extraordinary security measures brought large parts of Rawalpindi and Islamabad to a standstill as authorities sealed key routes ahead of high level talks between the United States and Iran in the federal capital.
Major arteries including Old Airport Road and access points to Nur Khan Airbase were blocked with containers and barbed wire, effectively confining thousands of residents to their homes. Entire neighborhoods reported severe movement restrictions, with locals describing the situation as a complete lockdown.
The closures disrupted daily life across affected areas such as Shah Khalid Colony, Gulzar e Quaid and Airport Housing Society. Commuters faced extreme hardship as public transport routes were suspended or shortened, forcing many including students and families to walk long distances.
Traffic congestion intensified across major city corridors, including Murree Road and Saddar, as diversions created bottlenecks. Markets and businesses in sensitive zones were instructed to shut down, further compounding economic losses for traders and daily wage earners.
Residents also reported shortages of essential supplies, including water and food, as delivery services were halted due to blocked roads. Many criticized the administration for failing to provide prior notice or alternative arrangements during the high security operation.
Officials confirmed that over 5000 security personnel were deployed across the region, with strict surveillance, checkpoints and patrols in place. Authorities maintained that the measures were necessary to ensure foolproof security during the sensitive diplomatic engagement, while promising to restore normalcy once the situation stabilises.
