GUJAR KHAN: In a major infrastructure push, the Punjab government has approved over Rs3.09 billion for the construction of two key underpasses on the busy GT Road, aiming to ease traffic congestion and reduce frequent accidents in the area.

According to officials from the Highway Department, one underpass will be built at Guliana More while the second will be constructed near the Technical Training College. The project is designed to streamline traffic flow within Gujar Khan and improve safety on one of the region’s most critical transport corridors.

Authorities have already initiated groundwork for the project, including the demolition of structures along the right of way. A Police Khidmat Centre, public washrooms and several kiosks have been removed, while more than 300 additional small setups are expected to be cleared in the coming days.

The large scale clearance operation has triggered concern among small traders who rely on these kiosks for their livelihoods. Many vendors have appealed to Maryam Nawaz Sharif to intervene and ensure protection of their income sources amid rising inflation and economic pressure.

In the Punjab Assembly, Raja Shaukat Aziz Bhatti welcomed the project but called for immediate measures to support affected traders. He proposed the allocation of alternative land for rebuilding kiosks and small shops to help displaced vendors continue their businesses.

Officials say the underpasses will significantly improve urban mobility and road safety once completed. However, the success of the project may depend on how effectively authorities balance infrastructure development with the economic concerns of local communities impacted by the expansion.
