ISLAMABAD: The government has issued an apology to electricity consumers after load management exceeded the promised duration, citing a sharp drop in hydropower generation that disrupted the national power supply.
In an official statement, the Power Division acknowledged that reduced water availability led to additional outages, forcing distribution companies to extend loadshedding beyond the previously announced 2.25 hours. The development triggered widespread complaints from consumers across the country.
Officials revealed that hydropower generation dropped by nearly 1991 megawatts during peak nighttime hours, contributing to an overall shortfall of around 4500 megawatts. With demand touching approximately 18000 megawatts, the supply gap placed significant strain on the system.
The decline in hydropower output has been linked to reduced water releases from dams, as regulated by the Indus River System Authority. Lower water demand due to recent rainfall and the ongoing harvesting season has resulted in decreased reservoir outflows, directly impacting electricity generation capacity.
Authorities clarified that the additional load management is primarily limited to nighttime hours, with no major shortages reported during the day. However, some distribution companies, including Islamabad Electric Supply Company, have implemented extended outages in certain areas, adding to public frustration.
The Power Division expressed optimism that the situation will improve as water releases increase and additional fuel supplies become available. Officials also urged consumers to conserve electricity, emphasizing that collective efforts are essential to stabilise the system and prevent further escalation in power disruptions.
