RAWALPINDI: Major roads across Rawalpindi were sealed on Sunday, triggering severe traffic disruption as authorities enforced strict security measures ahead of high level international talks in Islamabad. The city’s road network came under pressure as key arteries were blocked, diverting traffic and restricting mobility.
The most intense closures were reported around Nur Khan Airbase, where containers and barbed wire were placed to shut down major routes and link roads. Critical corridors including Old Airport Road, Koral Chowk and Airport Chowk were rendered inaccessible, forcing commuters to take long and poorly managed alternative routes.
Traffic flow collapsed in several parts of the city as public transport services were suspended. The Metro Bus Service and electric buses were halted, removing a major commuting option and increasing dependency on limited private transport. Thousands of daily passengers faced delays and confusion due to the sudden road shutdowns.
Authorities implemented multiple diversion plans, but lack of proper signage and coordination created bottlenecks on smaller roads. Areas such as Shah Khalid Colony, Gulzar e Quaid and Airport Housing Society experienced near complete road isolation, with residents struggling to access main city routes.
Commercial zones also felt the impact of disrupted road connectivity. Saddar and surrounding markets saw fluctuating activity as access roads were intermittently closed and reopened. Traders reported losses as customers were unable to reach business centres due to blocked routes and heavy security presence.
Urban mobility experts stress that while security driven road closures are sometimes necessary, better traffic management planning is essential to minimise disruption. Residents have called for structured diversion strategies, real time updates and improved road accessibility to ensure that future operations do not paralyse the city’s transport system.
