TAXILA: In a major push toward modernizing public transport, Punjab Minister for Transport and Mass Transit Bilal Akbar Khan announced that an electric green bus service will begin operations in Attock from April. The initial fleet of 15 buses will run on key routes connecting major towns, marking a significant step in sustainable mobility for the region.
Speaking after chairing a high-level meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the minister said the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to improving commuter experience while reducing environmental impact. Six additional routes have been earmarked for future expansion, targeting underserved areas once logistical challenges are addressed.
Depot facilities will be established at the tehsil level to ensure wider coverage, particularly for remote regions such as Pindigheband. Each electric bus will operate on a hybrid energy system and is expected to cover approximately 300 kilometers daily, completing five trips per day with each round trip taking one to one-and-a-half hours depending on traffic conditions.
To reduce operational costs, the government has introduced a subsidized tariff for electric vehicle charging, lowering the cost to Rs 35 per unit from the usual Rs 60 to Rs 70. The move is aimed at keeping fares affordable for citizens while promoting energy-efficient transport solutions.
Minister Bilal also highlighted measures to combat traditional overcharging by transport operators, particularly during festivals. A special enforcement squad has been formed, and fines exceeding Rs 14 million have already been imposed. He emphasized that travel fares will be displayed prominently on buses and that zero tolerance will be maintained against violators.
During his visit to bus stands in Attock and Rawalpindi, the minister interacted with passengers, reviewed complaint cells, and inspected ongoing infrastructure projects, including the CM Punjab First Women Bazaar. He reiterated the government’s goal of providing safe, reliable, and affordable travel for all residents ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
