ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority has moved closer to launching construction of the final segment of Margalla Avenue that will connect the artery directly with Motorway M1, significantly enhancing Islamabad’s northern road network. The decision was taken during a high level progress review meeting chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa.

Officials briefed the meeting that technical bids for the Rs3.58 billion project have already been opened, while financial bids will be finalized shortly. The contract will be awarded immediately after completion of the financial evaluation, paving the way for ground breaking on the remaining 2.7 kilometre stretch within Islamabad limits.

The project involves extending Margalla Avenue up to Sangjani Grid Station, where it will integrate with the motorway network. An interchange at GT Road is also included to ensure smooth traffic movement and reduce congestion on key entry and exit points of the capital.

Authorities said the completion of this missing link will provide a direct corridor between Islamabad and Motorway M1, improving regional connectivity and easing pressure on existing routes. The development is expected to facilitate commuters, streamline freight movement and support expanding residential sectors along the northern belt of the city.

The Margalla Avenue extension is being viewed as a strategic infrastructure upgrade that will reshape traffic dynamics in the capital. Once completed, it will strengthen Islamabad’s integration with the national motorway system and enhance long term urban mobility planning.
