ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority is planning three major road infrastructure projects aimed at improving traffic flow in the federal capital. The proposed schemes include rehabilitation of the Islamabad Expressway Service Road East, construction of an underpass at Kashmir Chowk and development of 11th Avenue.

Officials said bids from consultants for the service road and Kashmir Chowk underpass projects are being received this week, while bids for a consultant for 11th Avenue will follow shortly. After the appointment of consultants, detailed designs and planning documents will be prepared before financial bids are invited for construction.

The rehabilitation of the service road along the Islamabad Expressway is considered a priority project. The nearly nine kilometre stretch from Faizabad to the Gulberg Greens stop has deteriorated badly and is currently filled with potholes, creating serious difficulties for commuters travelling between Faizabad, Koral and nearby areas.

The CDA also plans to build an underpass at Kashmir Chowk near the Islamabad Club to streamline traffic at one of the city’s busiest intersections. Meanwhile, 11th Avenue will serve as a major arterial road connecting sectors G Eleven and G Twelve to improve mobility in northern Islamabad.

The projects were reviewed in a meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa at the authority’s headquarters. Senior officials from engineering, planning and finance departments attended the session to assess planning and timelines.

The CDA chief directed officials to ensure early commencement of construction work and stressed that infrastructure development remains a top priority to address Islamabad’s growing traffic pressures.
