RAWALPINDI: Commissioner Abdul Aamer Khattak has directed authorities to accelerate the Raja Bazaar upgradation project, stressing strict timelines, quality control and minimal disruption to traders in the city historic commercial hub. The directive came during his detailed inspection of the ongoing beautification works alongside Deputy Commissioner Dr Hassan Waqar Cheema.
Officials informed the commissioner that civil construction has reached 29 percent completion, while major utility relocation is nearing completion. Shifting of electricity lines stands at 92 percent, Sui Gas at 97 percent, PTCL at 95 percent and Wasa lines at 95 percent. The project is scheduled for completion by May 30, 2026.
The redevelopment plan includes construction of arch walls, facade improvement of buildings, installation of tuff tiles, benches, modern street lighting, Victorian style lamps, dust bins and decorative planters. Entrance points of Raja Bazaar are also being redesigned to enhance the visual identity of the area.
Commissioner Khattak emphasized that Raja Bazaar reflects the cultural and commercial legacy of Rawalpindi and must be upgraded in line with modern urban standards without compromising its historic character. He ordered strict use of high quality materials and continuous monitoring to ensure durability and transparency.
He also instructed officials to maintain pedestrian access and facilitate shopkeepers during construction. Alternative pathways must remain operational to avoid business losses. Worker safety protocols including helmets, jackets, signboards, barriers and adequate night lighting were declared mandatory.
Authorities said that under the project, utility lines including Iesco, Wasa, SNGPL and PTCL are being shifted underground to improve infrastructure resilience. Once completed, the Raja Bazaar beautification initiative is expected to transform the congested marketplace into a safer, organized and visually upgraded commercial corridor for citizens and traders alike.
