RAWALPINDI: A sharp spike in pollen levels has pushed Islamabad and Rawalpindi into a high risk zone, with health experts warning of a growing wave of eye allergies and respiratory issues across the twin cities. The seasonal surge has intensified rapidly, raising concerns among medical professionals and residents alike.

Data released by the Pakistan Meteorological Department shows pollen counts in Islamabad’s H-8 sector soaring to an alarming 14,695 particles per cubic metre. Other areas including G-6 and E-8 have also recorded significantly elevated levels, signaling widespread exposure.

The primary culprit remains paper mulberry, which accounts for the overwhelming majority of airborne allergens. Classified at very high levels, this pollen is known to trigger severe allergic reactions, particularly during peak season which typically spans from mid March to April.

Medical experts at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital report a surge in patients suffering from allergic conjunctivitis. Symptoms include redness, itching, tearing, swelling, and sensitivity to light, affecting daily life and outdoor activity for thousands of residents.

Health officials estimate that nearly 30 percent of the population in the twin cities suffers from allergic rhinitis, with hospitals witnessing a consistent rise in cases each year. Experts warn that climate change is worsening the situation, as rising temperatures and reduced rainfall allow pollen to linger longer in the air.

Doctors strongly advise preventive measures, including wearing protective eyewear outdoors, limiting exposure during peak hours, and keeping indoor environments sealed. Residents experiencing severe symptoms are urged to seek medical consultation promptly, as authorities brace for continued high pollen levels in the coming weeks.
