RAWALPINDI: In a shocking crackdown ahead of Eidul Fitr, the National Highways and Motorway Police have suspended 11 passenger buses for forcing travelers into baggage compartments, a dangerous and illegal practice that puts lives at serious risk. The action was taken as part of intensified safety checks during the holiday rush.
According to a motorway police spokesperson, the buses were caught carrying passengers inside luggage holds beneath the main seating area. Authorities termed the act criminal negligence, stating that such practices can lead to suffocation, injury, and even fatalities in case of emergencies.
During inspections at the Islamabad Main Toll Plaza, officials evacuated multiple passengers who had been crammed into these compartments. The rescued individuals were shifted to safer arrangements while legal action was initiated against the transport operators responsible.
Officials stressed that no compromise will be made on passenger safety, especially during peak travel seasons like Eid. The motorway police have ramped up enforcement to deter reckless transport practices and ensure that citizens travel under safe and humane conditions.
In parallel, the NHMP has issued a comprehensive Eid travel advisory, warning of a sharp increase in traffic on motorways and national highways. Additional personnel have been deployed, patrol operations expanded, and monitoring systems upgraded to manage the expected surge.
Motorists have been urged to follow newly reduced speed limits and strictly adhere to traffic rules. Authorities emphasized the importance of lane discipline, seat belt usage, and attentive driving, reinforcing that safety remains the top priority during the festive travel period.
