ISLAMABAD: Multiple key routes leading into Islamabad’s Red Zone were closed on Friday as authorities prepared for expected protests by religious parties, police confirmed. Only select corridors remain accessible to commuters, with residents urged to plan alternative routes to avoid delays.
The Islamabad Police announced that Margalla Road and the route via the Islamabad Marriott Hotel will remain open for entry into the Red Zone. In a statement posted on X, officials confirmed that all other access points to the Red Zone would remain closed, including Fazal-e-Haq Road leading to China Chowk. Citizens were advised to use Jinnah Avenue as a safe alternative.
Traffic management teams have issued detailed diversion plans. Vehicles traveling from Polyclinic towards Lal Quarter Chowk will be redirected via Luqman Hakim Road. Meanwhile, Saddar Road has been recommended as another viable option for commuters navigating the congested city center.
For travelers moving from sectors G-6 to F-6, officials suggested using the China Chowk underpass or taking Seventh Avenue to reach Jinnah Avenue. Traffic from Abpara Chowk heading towards Serena Hotel will also follow designated diversion routes to maintain smooth flow and prevent gridlocks in high-risk areas.
Authorities also provided guidance for those coming from Club Road or Bara Kahu, advising a route via Kashmir Chowk, Srinagar Highway, Seventh Avenue, and Margalla Road. The advisory coincides with the planned protest march from G-6 to D-Chowk, with all roads leading directly to D-Chowk remaining inaccessible.
Commuters seeking real-time updates can contact the police helpline at 15 or the Traffic Helpline at 1915. Additionally, live traffic updates will be broadcast on ITF FM 92.4. The closures follow nationwide protest announcements by Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan leader Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, expressing solidarity with Iran following attacks by the US and Israel. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure commuter safety and smooth traffic movement.
