ISLAMABAD: The federal government and the Capital Development Authority are actively considering the construction of a new Islamabad Convention Expo and Exhibition Centre near the Bhara Kahu bypass as part of preparations for major international events, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit scheduled for 2027. The proposed facility is intended to position Islamabad as a regional hub for global conferences and exhibitions.

Sources indicate that land already acquired by the CDA near Malpur close to the starting point of the Bhara Kahu bypass is emerging as the most viable option. Senior CDA officials say the location offers strategic advantages due to its proximity to the Diplomatic Enclave and key arterial roads, making it suitable for hosting high level international delegations and large scale events.

According to officials, the CDA Development Working Party has already approved the PC One of the project with an estimated cost of Rs19.3 billion. Once construction begins, the centre is expected to be completed within 18 months. Another site is also under review, but Malpur is currently viewed as the leading contender for the flagship project.

Planning documents describe the proposed centre as a world class multifunctional venue designed to host conventions exhibitions expos trade fairs and cultural activities. It will be equipped with modern facilities to meet international standards and is expected to play a central role during the SCO summit in Islamabad.

The CDA has projected the facility as a long term revenue generating asset. Income streams are expected from event hosting venue rentals service contracts and increased tourism activity. The project is aligned with the Islamabad Master Plan and broader efforts to enhance the capital’s global profile.

Officials note that the existing Jinnah Convention Centre is no longer sufficient to host large international gatherings, prompting the need for a modern alternative. If approved at the Malpur site, the new centre could also complement future urban development initiatives envisioned along the Bhara Kahu corridor, strengthening Islamabad’s role as a diplomatic and commercial destination.
