ISLAMABAD: A major infrastructure push is underway in the federal capital as the Capital Development Authority has formally launched construction on a key stretch of Margalla Avenue aimed at connecting the city directly with the Peshawar Motorway.

The 2.7 kilometre link road is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Islamabad and northern routes. Officials confirmed that construction has already begun on available land, while the remaining portion will be developed after the completion of land acquisition.

Authorities revealed that out of the total stretch, nearly one kilometre is currently under construction. The remaining land is expected to be acquired through fresh legal proceedings after the expiry of the earlier acquisition notification in April, ensuring uninterrupted progress on the project.

The development was reviewed during a high level meeting chaired by Mohammad Khurram Agha, where officials also briefed participants on additional road infrastructure plans aimed at transforming urban mobility in Islamabad.

Among upcoming projects, authorities are preparing to initiate work on the Kashmir Chowk underpass, while consultancy processes are underway for 11th Avenue and a major service road along the Islamabad Expressway. These projects are expected to further streamline traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks across key corridors.

Officials said the broader vision includes integrating major roads such as Ataturk Avenue, Aga Khan Road and Jinnah Avenue into a modern urban network, alongside enhanced security and environmental compliance. The new Margalla Avenue link is being seen as a critical step towards a faster, more connected and congestion free Islamabad.
