ISLAMABAD: In a landmark breakthrough for Pakistan’s energy sector, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited has successfully launched oil production from its Pasakhi-13 well in Sindh, marking the country’s first ever horizontal oil well in a clastic reservoir.
The development was officially disclosed in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, where the company confirmed that the Pasakhi-13 well, located in Hyderabad district, is currently producing around 460 barrels of oil per day. The achievement is being hailed as a major step forward in enhancing domestic hydrocarbon output.
According to the company, the well was drilled to a depth of 2966 meters, including a 546 meter horizontal section. Advanced geo steering technology was deployed to precisely navigate a narrow drilling window, allowing engineers to effectively target the most productive zone within the reservoir.
OGDCL stated that the well has been equipped with an Electric Submersible Pump system specifically optimised for horizontal drilling operations. Despite complex reservoir conditions, the innovative approach has delivered nearly three times higher production compared to nearby conventional wells.
The Pasakhi-13 well is part of the Pasakhi and Pasakhi North Development and Production Lease, where OGDCL holds full operational control. Officials said the milestone reflects the company’s growing capability to deploy cutting edge technologies aligned with global industry standards.
As Pakistan’s largest exploration and production company, OGDCL continues to play a central role in strengthening national energy security. With the government holding a majority stake, the company’s latest success is expected to reduce reliance on imports and open new avenues for advanced oil exploration across the country.
