RAWALPINDI: The historic Rawalpindi Railway Station, nearly 145 years old, has undergone a major transformation, offering passengers modern facilities, enhanced security, and a cleaner, more comfortable travel experience. The iconic station, built in 1881 in Anglo-Indian architectural style, has been restored while retaining its historic charm.

Previously marked by broken windows, aging platforms, and unclean washrooms, the station now boasts refurbished waiting areas, functional restrooms, and upgraded platforms. Wooden and steel pedestrian bridges have been maintained, while modern stalls for tea, snacks, newspapers, and books provide convenience to travelers.

Security has been significantly enhanced under the new Safe and Smart Station System, implemented in collaboration with the Frontier Works Organisation. A network of 184 CCTV cameras monitors the building, platforms, parking areas, and entry and exit points. Advanced luggage screening ensures passengers’ safety, while staff performance is tracked in real-time.

A Commercially Important Person (CIP) lounge has been established, offering a quiet, comfortable space for travelers, along with tea and refreshment facilities. Additional upgrades include dedicated waiting areas for women and families, free Wi-Fi, and ATM machines, reflecting an airport-style experience for train passengers.

Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi highlighted that the station has become the first in Pakistan to feature such advanced security and passenger-centric systems. He added that Pakistan Railways is replacing old coach racks, digitalising stations across the country, and outsourcing select trains to improve services.

The Rawalpindi Railway Station upgrade signals Pakistan Railways’ shift toward a modern, safe, and passenger-friendly system. Minister Abbasi said the ongoing transformation aims to make train travel convenient and secure for millions of Pakistanis, while preserving the station’s historic significance. The development sets a benchmark for modernising other major railway hubs nationwide.
