The anticipated cut comes as international crude prices witnessed a gradual decline over the past fortnight. Brent crude, which had surged earlier due to geopolitical tensions and supply concerns, has recently stabilized as global demand softened and inventories rose. This easing in global markets has paved the way for domestic price adjustments under the government’s fortnightly review mechanism.

Industry insiders suggest that a stronger rupee against the US dollar has also contributed to the expected reduction. Since petroleum imports are dollar-denominated, a firmer local currency helps offset the impact of international price movements. The combination of a stable exchange rate and moderate global oil prices has created room for local price relief.

However, the benefit may vary across petroleum products due to differing import premiums and freight charges. Diesel prices, for instance, are less flexible given its higher import cost and heavy demand in the agricultural and transport sectors. This explains the smaller decrease compared to petrol’s sharper drop.

Economic analysts believe the revision could help ease inflationary pressures, especially on transportation and essential goods. Reduced fuel costs tend to ripple through various sectors, lowering overall consumer expenses.
