Pakistan Petroleum Limited has successfully restored gas production from the Adam West X1 ST well in the Hala Block of District Matiari after completing a complex workover operation. The project targeted a persistent water breakthrough issue that had halted output for several years, marking a major milestone for the company’s energy development efforts.
PPL operates the Hala Block with a 65 per cent working interest in partnership with Mari Energies Limited, which holds the remaining 35 per cent. The company confirmed that the sidetracked well has been tested at an impressive production rate of around 8.5 million standard cubic feet per day of gas. The test recorded a wellhead pressure of 540 psig on a 58 by 64 inch choke, according to a statement issued on Monday.
The Adam West X1 well has a significant history in Pakistan’s upstream sector. It originally made a hydrocarbon discovery in September 2014 in the Lower Goru formation and commenced commercial production in June 2015. However by 2019, rising water inflow severely hampered production and ultimately caused the well to shut down. This issue persisted despite multiple earlier attempts to isolate the water producing zones.
Comprehensive reservoir modelling later showed that drilling a sidetrack was the only feasible and commercially sound option to revive the well. The decision set the stage for an intensive engineering effort aimed at accessing hydrocarbon bearing sections above the problematic intervals.
The workover operation started in October and involved drilling a new sidetrack wellbore. PPL highlighted that the task was complex and high risk, requiring meticulous planning and execution to ensure safe and effective intervention. The restoration of flow marks a major operational achievement for the company.
PPL stated that with testing successfully completed, the Adam West X1 ST well will soon be connected to the Hala Block processing facilities once rig demobilisation is finished. The restored output is expected to support the region’s gas supply and strengthen Pakistan’s domestic energy production.
