ISLAMABAD: Capital Development Authority Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa chaired a high level meeting to review progress on the Shahdara Dam project, a key initiative aimed at strengthening long term water security for the federal capital. Senior CDA officials, including Member Administration Talat Mahmood, Member Planning and Design Dr Khalid Hafeez, Director General Islamabad Water, the Deputy Commissioner CDA and other senior officers attended the meeting.

Officials briefed the chairman that Wapda has completed the feasibility study of the Shahdara Dam and shared the comprehensive report with CDA. The study covers land acquisition requirements, water conveyance infrastructure, a water treatment plant and preliminary cost estimates, marking a major milestone for the project.

According to the briefing, the Shahdara Dam will have a water storage capacity spread over 25 acres and is designed to supply up to 10 million gallons of water per day to Islamabad. With the feasibility phase completed, authorities will now move towards preparing the detailed design to advance the project into the execution stage.

The meeting was informed that the PC One will be prepared and submitted for approval in the near future. Chairman Randhawa directed that a formal survey be conducted through SUPARCO before initiating land acquisition. He stressed that all land related matters must be handled transparently and strictly in accordance with legal requirements.

The CDA chairman further instructed that the feasibility report and detailed design be presented to the committee established to address water shortages in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, ensuring coordinated planning for the twin cities.

The meeting also reviewed progress on the Dottara Dam project, where officials said work on the feasibility study is currently underway. Chairman Randhawa stated that both dam projects will play a vital role in meeting Islamabad’s growing water demand and reaffirmed that uninterrupted water supply for residents remains one of CDA’s top priorities.
