RAWALPINDI: The transformation of Kutchery Chowk is entering a decisive phase as authorities begin constructing eight modern bus stops to support the upcoming expansion of electric bus services, signaling a major upgrade in urban mobility across the garrison city.

Officials from the Punjab Highway Department confirmed that with nearly 75 percent of the remodelling work completed, dedicated bus bays are now being developed along key routes. These include locations near Fatima Jinnah Women University, District Courts, Adiala Road, Lal Kurti, Rashid Minhas Road, Old Airport Road and Jhelum Road.

The new bus stops are designed as state of the art facilities aimed at improving accessibility for women, elderly passengers and persons with disabilities. Authorities said the design focuses on safety, comfort and efficient passenger flow, aligning with modern public transport standards.

The development is part of the second phase of the electric bus project, which will significantly expand connectivity after the completion of Kutchery Chowk. Officials revealed that the number of electric buses operating in Rawalpindi is expected to increase from 45 to around 120, covering more routes across the city.

Once completed, the revamped traffic system will enable signal free movement from Rawat to the Motorway and key urban corridors, while electric buses will connect major hubs including Raja Bazaar, Saddar and surrounding areas with improved reliability.

Backed by the vision of Maryam Nawaz, the initiative also includes subsidised travel, with free rides for women, students and senior citizens. Authorities say the project will not only ease congestion but also redefine public transport in Rawalpindi with cleaner, safer and more efficient mobility options.
