ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to construct a new interchange at 17th Avenue on Srinagar Highway, a major move aimed at improving Islamabad’s road connectivity and reducing daily traffic congestion.
The interchange will link Sector I-16 with the main Srinagar Highway, providing a faster route for commuters traveling between residential zones and major business districts. The project also includes development of 16th Avenue and service roads between Sectors H-16 and H-17, forming part of the CDA’s long-term transportation master plan.
According to CDA’s written reply to the National Assembly, the project’s detailed design and feasibility studies are currently in progress. Once finalized, tenders will be floated to kick-start construction, with the goal of easing bottlenecks that frequently slow down movement on the capital’s northern corridors.
Officials say the new interchange will significantly cut commute times for residents of surrounding sectors and improve access to Islamabad’s industrial and educational zones. It’s expected to enhance overall road safety and reduce vehicle emissions by shortening travel distances.
Urban planners have welcomed the move, calling it a “strategic step” toward balanced urban expansion. The CDA has pledged that the project will follow international standards for quality and safety.
This development marks another milestone in Islamabad’s infrastructure modernization drive, aligning with the government’s broader vision of a connected, smart, and sustainable capital city.
