ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority has ordered an early feasibility study for launching an electric tram project in Islamabad, marking a major step towards strengthening sustainable urban transport in the federal capital. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa, with senior officials in attendance.
The meeting was attended by CDA Board Member Administration Talat Mahmood, Member Planning and Design Dr Khalid Hafiz, Member Finance Tahir Naeem, Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon, and other senior officers. Participants discussed the scope, implementation framework, and infrastructure requirements of the proposed electric tram and electric bus projects.
According to a CDA press release, the feasibility study will be conducted at the earliest and will cover all technical and operational aspects of the electric tram system. The project includes the establishment of modern depots, parking areas, charging stations, and maintenance facilities. The tram system will be developed under a modern Intelligent Transport System and integrated with Islamabad’s existing and planned public transport network.
Chairman CDA emphasized that the feasibility study must prioritize connectivity with key locations across the city, particularly Islamabad International Airport. He stressed that updated ridership data and future passenger demand should be carefully assessed to ensure long-term viability and efficiency of the project.
In a separate meeting, the CDA chairman reviewed progress on the development of new residential sectors in Islamabad. Officials informed that basic infrastructure work in Sector C-14 has entered its final stages and that the process of handing over possession of plots will begin shortly. The chairman directed the installation of plot and street number signboards and instructed that all plot details be uploaded on the e-map.
The meeting also reviewed development work in Sectors I-12 and E-12. Officials reported that most residential and commercial plots in I-12 are nearing completion, while infrastructure work in E-12 Sub-sectors 1 and 2 is almost complete. Development in Sub-sector 3 is ongoing, and tenders for Sub-sector 4 will be issued soon after resolving obstacles. Chairman Randhawa directed early plot handovers and strict removal of illegal constructions and encroachments to ensure planned urban growth.
