ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority has moved ahead with plans to establish a massive Safari Park in the Malpur Forestry Park area, marking one of the most ambitious tourism and wildlife projects proposed for the federal capital in recent years. Spread across 360 acres, the project is expected to transform Islamabad’s recreational landscape while creating a new destination for families, tourists and wildlife enthusiasts.
According to officials, the site at Malpur Forestry Park has been finalized after extensive deliberations, with authorities insisting that the existing forest ecosystem will remain protected. Instead of replacing the forestry park, the Safari Park will be integrated into the natural surroundings, allowing animals to live in an environment enriched by dense tree cover and natural vegetation.
The CDA has already hired consultancy firm ECSP to conduct the feasibility study and prepare detailed engineering designs for the project. Officials said the consultant is currently finalizing technical assessments and recommendations, including the selection of animal species best suited to Islamabad’s climate and ecological conditions. Once the study is completed, the authority will initiate the tendering process.
The project gained momentum after CDA’s Development Working Party approved a Rs173 million PC II for consultancy services. Earlier, the federal government informed the National Assembly that the proposed Safari Park would cost approximately Rs10 billion and could be completed within 18 months after construction begins.
The initiative comes years after the closure of the Marghazar Zoo, which was shut down following directives from the Islamabad High Court over concerns regarding animal welfare and management standards. Since then, debates have continued over the future of wildlife facilities in the capital and the need for modern conservation focused alternatives.
While the CDA had previously explored the possibility of reviving the zoo, the authority has now shifted its focus toward developing a state of the art Safari Park. Officials believe the project will promote biodiversity, strengthen wildlife conservation efforts and establish Islamabad as a leading eco tourism destination in Pakistan.
