ISLAMABAD: Islamabad is poised for an aggressive development drive in 2026 as the Capital Development Authority prepares to launch a new wave of infrastructure and urban uplift projects under a comprehensive plan announced by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The announcement came as the Shaheen Chowk underpass was opened to traffic, marking the completion of 18 development projects during 2025.

Addressing the media, the interior minister said the Shaheen Chowk underpass was opened on the final day of the year as part of New Year activities, while its formal inauguration would be carried out by the prime minister. He praised the CDA and contractors for completing the project well ahead of schedule, calling it a major relief for motorists on Margalla Road and 9th Avenue.

Mohsin Naqvi revealed that several key road and infrastructure projects were completed in 2025, including the Serena Interchange, Murree Road underpass, F Eight Interchange, T Chowk flyover, Park Road and the Business Facilitation Centre. He said a total of 18 projects worth Rs 15 billion were completed during the year.

Looking ahead, the minister announced that the number of development projects would be doubled in 2026. He said Vision 2027 for Islamabad would be unveiled in January, focusing on greenery, parks and urban beautification. He added that work on the jail project was also progressing steadily.

Highlighting the Shaheen Chowk underpass, officials said the Rs 1.3 billion project was completed in just 63 days against an original timeline of 150 days. The cost increased by 15 percent due to design changes, including extending the underpass barrel to improve traffic flow.

The minister outlined four core goals for 2026, including beautification, greenery, entertainment and revitalising the city’s atmosphere. He announced plans for new restaurants, a convention centre, an expo centre and a cricket stadium, while stressing strict action against encroachments on state land and accountability for officials involved.
