ISLAMABAD: The federal government has unveiled an ambitious plan to develop a massive 1,000 kanal public park at the scenic foothills of the Margalla Hills, marking a major push to enhance green spaces and recreational infrastructure in the capital.

The decision was taken during a high level meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi at CDA Headquarters, where officials reviewed ongoing and future development initiatives. The proposed park is expected to be established near Sector D-12 on a large tract of acquired land owned by the Capital Development Authority.

Sources indicate the project will be part of a broader urban transformation strategy, with additional plans for a cricket stadium and a designated Olympic Village spanning 175 acres in the same vicinity. The move signals Islamabad’s shift towards integrated sports and leisure infrastructure aligned with international standards.

However, officials acknowledged regulatory hurdles. The site falls within Zone III, where strict zoning laws currently restrict construction activities. While parks and sports facilities are permissible, the development of allied commercial infrastructure such as hotels will require amendments to existing regulations and approval from the federal cabinet.

The scale of the proposed park is significant, potentially surpassing Islamabad’s largest existing park, Fatima Jinnah Park in Sector F-9, which spans 650 acres. Authorities clarified that an earlier mention of 1,000 acres was a typographical error, reaffirming the project size at 1,000 kanals.

In parallel developments, the government is exploring joint ventures with international firms to build five star hotels and introduce a zero tax regime to attract investors. A comprehensive land survey, digital reforms within CDA, and the establishment of a central emergency control room are also part of the modernization drive.

Meanwhile, efforts to operationalize the Gandhara Citizen and Heritage Club in F-9 Park continue, as authorities aim to revive the long delayed cultural facility envisioned as a hub for exhibitions and heritage promotion.
