RAWALPINDI: Traffic woes in the city have intensified as rain damaged patchwork on key diversion routes has worsened commuting conditions amid the ongoing Katchery Chowk remodeling project.
Gulistan Colony Road in Chaklala, designated as a major alternate route, has deteriorated rapidly after recent rainfall. Temporary asphalt repairs failed to hold, leaving behind potholes and uneven surfaces that have made driving hazardous for thousands of daily commuters.
The situation has compounded challenges already triggered by the closure of Katchery Chowk, a major traffic hub. Authorities had earlier identified multiple diversion and blocking points to manage traffic flow, but poor road conditions and lack of proper infrastructure have undermined these plans.
Traffic police officials reported difficulties in maintaining smooth flow due to damaged roads, missing signboards and inadequate street lighting on alternate routes. Despite repeated communication with relevant departments, no significant repair work has been carried out.
Chief Traffic Officer Farhan Aslam has raised concerns with multiple authorities, including the Rawalpindi Development Authority and city administration, highlighting the urgent need for road rehabilitation and functional traffic signals.
Residents have expressed frustration over the prolonged disruption, questioning why basic road maintenance has been ignored despite heavy spending on mega projects. With delays in the completion of the Katchery Chowk project, commuters fear continued hardship unless immediate corrective measures are taken.
