ISLAMABAD, October 27: Road users may have to prepare for more toll taxes as the Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has announced to multifold enhancement in the revenue of the National Highway Authority (NHA).

At present, NHA is generating around Rs110 billion annually, and a major contribution to this increase came from a 100 percent rise in toll tax during the last one year. However, the minister has now set a target to increase the NHA’s annual revenue to Rs500 billion.

A high-level meeting on the revamping and restructuring of NHA was held under the chairmanship of the Minister for Communications. Consultants from Ferguson briefed the minister on the proposed restructuring plan, aligning the authority with corporate governance practices as a state-owned enterprise.

Mr. Abdul Aleem Khan emphasized the importance of assigning officers to geographically limited areas to ensure timely and efficient delivery of projects. He said performance evaluations of officers would be conducted every three months to strengthen accountability and improve productivity. The minister noted that smaller and more focused work units under each responsible officer would enhance operational efficiency across the organization.

The minister further expressed his vision to enhance NHA’s revenue collection target to Rs500 billion within the next three years, noting that substantial growth had already been achieved during his first year in office. He added that toll tax had been revised gradually to avoid putting additional burden on taxpayers.

Abdul Aleem Khan directed the consulting firm to submit a comprehensive action plan for restructuring within two months, reiterating that increased revenue would directly contribute to road, highway, and motorway development across the country.
