ISLAMABAD: In a move highlighting strategic preparedness amid renewed regional tensions, the National Highway Authority (NHA) has invited electronic bids for the re-carpeting of a motorway section designed to facilitate fighter aircraft operations.
According to a tender flouted in national media, the NHA’s Central Zone has sought bids for the re-carpeting of the road-runway surface from KM 133+000 to 138+000 on Motorway (M-4).
The project specifically mentioned as being for “fighter aircraft operations” underscores Pakistan’s long-standing practice of maintaining motorway segments capable of serving dual purposes: civilian transport and emergency air operations.
The move comes at a time when security concerns remain heightened due to simmering border tensions with India, following recent statements and military exercises on both sides of the border.
Defense observers note that the timing of this tender reflects Pakistan’s continued emphasis on rapid-response infrastructure capable of supporting the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) during potential crises.
Pakistan’s motorways — particularly stretches of the M-2, M-3, and M-4 — have in the past been utilized for fighter jet landings and take-offs, demonstrating the versatility of the national highway network under emergency conditions. The current project appears to be part of ongoing maintenance and upgradation of these strategic assets.
