ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced that vehicles without M-Tags will not be allowed to enter Islamabad starting January 1, 2026. Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that this measure aims to enhance security across the capital and streamline city monitoring through advanced technology.
Minister Naqvi, along with Minister of State Tallal Chaudhry, visited the Safe City Headquarters to review the digital surveillance system and public safety measures. The Interior Minister instructed authorities to prepare a comprehensive plan to transform Islamabad Safe City into the broader Capital Smart City initiative, integrating multiple citizen services under a centralized system.
Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Memon confirmed that 16 M-Tag facilitation points have been established at key locations, allowing residents to register their vehicles before the deadline. Since November 14, nearly 100,000 vehicles have already received M-Tags. Tag readers installed at city entry points will identify vehicles without M-Tags, and action will be taken immediately from January 1, 2026.
M-Tags, a pre-paid sticker system initially introduced for motorways, enable cashless tolling, faster lane access, and a smoother driving experience. Now, the technology will serve as a critical tool to ensure Islamabad’s security. Vehicle owners are encouraged to acquire their M-Tags at the official fee of Rs250 to avoid inconvenience.
During the visit, Minister Naqvi observed security surveillance operations, including measures at the Special Chinese Desk, and stressed the need for reforms in Safe City operations. He highlighted that the Capital Smart City project would integrate Rescue 1122, traffic management, security, and CDA services to make Islamabad a model of urban safety.
The Interior Minister further stated that the Capital Smart City model would eventually be expanded nationwide. Officials confirmed that technology has already demonstrated significant efficiency, particularly during Muharramul Haram, saving valuable time and resources while protecting citizens’ lives and property.
