The Rawalpindi Ring Road project has entered a new phase of development as authorities approve a revised alignment along with the addition of motorway grade features and toll plazas. The redesigned plan aims to improve connectivity between Rawalpindi and major national routes, ensuring faster movement of traffic and reducing congestion on urban roads.

The project first gained prominence during the tenure of former Prime Minister Imran Khan when it was launched as a sixty four kilometre corridor from Rawat to Sangjani via Murat. However, the earlier alignment was halted after corruption allegations surfaced. Following the suspension of the previous design, officials initiated a fresh assessment to develop a more transparent and efficient plan for the Ring Road.

According to records, the old alignment stretched sixty six kilometres starting from Rawat Radio Pakistan and extending to Thalian before heading towards Sangjani through Murat. The project carried an estimated cost of sixty four billion rupees. Although ambitious in scope, it involved significant engineering challenges and a longer route that increased overall expenditure.

The newly approved alignment is more compact and efficient. It consists of a thirty eight kilometre controlled access road beginning at Baanth along National Highway N five and passing through Chakbeli Road, Adiala Road and Chakri Road. It then connects directly to Motorway M two at the Thallian Interchange. This improved route is expected to enhance travel efficiency, boost logistics and provide a smoother experience for commuters and transporters.

A joint venture of Turkish and Pakistani firms studying the project has recommended a two phase execution strategy. Phase one will focus on the Baanth to Thallian section while phase two will require hiring a new consultant to determine the optimal path from Thallian to Sangjani. This phased approach aims to streamline construction and ensure technical accuracy.

With the revised alignment finalized, the Rawalpindi Ring Road project is positioned to strengthen regional connectivity, improve traffic flow and play a key role in future infrastructure expansion across the twin cities.
