TAXILA: A major transformation is underway in Hassanabdal as the Punjab government launches a Rs210 million facelift project aimed at turning the historic city into an international tourist destination ahead of the upcoming pilgrimage season.
Renowned for housing the sacred Gurdwara Sri Panja Sahib, the city attracts thousands of Sikh pilgrims from around the world, particularly during Baisakhi and the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. Officials say the new initiative is designed to enhance both infrastructure and visitor experience.
Authorities revealed that the project includes shifting overhead utility lines underground to improve safety and aesthetics, alongside the construction of grand entrance gates at key entry points to create a striking first impression for visitors arriving in the city.
Urban infrastructure is also being upgraded through the installation of modern tuff tiles on roads, while building façades are being redesigned to create a more organised and visually appealing cityscape. These steps are expected to significantly improve both mobility and the overall urban environment.
To manage the growing influx of pilgrims, a dedicated parking facility is being developed, while the central public square in front of the gurdwara is being redesigned with landscaping and modern amenities. A food park and a full scale food street at Lalarukh Park are also being established to boost tourism and local economic activity.
Officials say the initiative blends heritage preservation with modern planning to position Hassanabdal as a leading religious tourism hub. With work progressing at pace ahead of Baisakhi, the project is expected to elevate the city’s global profile while delivering long term economic and cultural benefits.
