RAWALPINDI: Authorities have stepped up flood preparedness efforts as the Water and Sanitation Agency prepares to open bids for the large scale cleaning of Leh Nullah and 11 major drains ahead of the monsoon season.

Wasa officials said contracts for the desilting and dredging work are set to be awarded as part of an urgent drive to reduce flood risks in the garrison city. The Punjab government has allocated funds for the operation, with the first phase scheduled to begin on May 1 and continue through June.

A detailed survey of Leh Nullah has already identified 19 vulnerable points where obstructions threaten the smooth flow of rainwater. Officials say clearing these choke points is critical to preventing urban flooding, particularly in high risk areas historically exposed to monsoon damage.

Cleaning work has already begun at key locations including Kattarian, Pirwadhai and Gawalmandi, while desilting operations are underway along major drains feeding into Leh Nullah. A second phase of the project is planned from July to September to maintain flow during peak rainfall months.

Authorities have also intensified action against dumping of garbage and construction waste along the nullah, warning strict enforcement against violators. Officials say solid waste, including massive volumes of plastic bags, remains a major threat to drainage capacity and flood management.

The urgency is shaped by memories of the devastating 2001 Leh flood, one of Rawalpindi’s worst disasters. With heavy rains capable of rapidly raising water levels to dangerous limits, the clean up campaign is being viewed as a crucial defence to protect lives, infrastructure and vulnerable communities this monsoon.
