GUJAR KHAN: More than 300 kiosks have been demolished in Gujar Khan as authorities cleared land for two major underpasses and road widening works, triggering concern among small traders who say the development has cost them their livelihoods.

The demolition drive was launched under a Punjab government approved infrastructure plan aimed at easing traffic congestion and upgrading the town’s transport network. The affected kiosks, many operating under a low cost market setup, were removed after the tehsil administration issued a deadline for traders to vacate by April 23.

Facing the ultimatum, many vendors began dismantling their stalls and removing merchandise before the operation, hoping to avoid losses. However, with the kiosks reduced to rubble, hundreds of traders now find themselves without a place to work and are urging the government to provide an alternative site.

The displaced vendors have appealed for relocation of the Sasta Bazaar to a suitable location within the town, arguing that the project should not come at the expense of small businesses and daily wage earners. Many say they support development but want rehabilitation measures to accompany such large scale operations.

Officials maintain the underpasses and carriageway expansion are critical to improving traffic flow and urban mobility in Gujar Khan, where congestion has worsened in recent years. The project is being seen as part of a broader push to modernise transport infrastructure in the region.

The demolition has nevertheless sparked debate over balancing development with livelihoods, as affected traders await government action on relocation. For many, the future now hinges on whether authorities pair infrastructure expansion with support for those displaced in the process.
