ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has placed Pakistan’s energy security at the heart of the national development agenda, directing that public funds must only be spent on projects that deliver measurable outcomes. He reviewed the ongoing development budget and future proposals under the Public Sector Development Programme.
He stressed that ministries showing better performance will be prioritized in funding allocations, introducing a results based framework for development spending. The prime minister underlined that strengthening the energy sector remains critical for economic stability and instructed officials to accelerate work on key power infrastructure initiatives.
Water reservoirs and hydropower generation projects were declared top national priorities, with special focus on major schemes including Dasu Dam, Diamer Bhasha Dam and Mohmand Dam. He said these projects are essential for expanding clean electricity generation, improving water storage capacity and reducing reliance on imported fuels.
Officials briefed the meeting on progress in ongoing energy and infrastructure projects as well as funding requirements for the next fiscal cycle. The prime minister directed authorities to expand public private partnerships to speed up execution of energy projects and improve efficiency in power sector investments.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb was commended for strong market response to the Panda Bond, which supports broader fiscal stability and indirectly strengthens energy financing capacity. Performance of the power ministry was also appreciated as part of efforts to stabilize electricity supply and improve sector efficiency.
In parallel discussions, Shehbaz Sharif engaged with international stakeholders on investment opportunities in Pakistan’s energy and infrastructure sectors. He emphasized expanding collaboration in power generation, hydropower development and energy related financing, positioning Pakistan as a growing destination for strategic energy investment and long term partnerships.
