Rawalpindi authorities are considering a major rehabilitation and expansion programme covering 13 roads, with funding proposed from the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation’s development budget.
RAWALPINDI: A development proposal worth Rs2.86 billion is under consideration for the rehabilitation, carpeting and expansion of 13 roads across Rawalpindi’s inner-city areas.
The proposed scheme is planned to be financed through development funds allocated to the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC). The programme is intended to address road conditions in the city’s inner areas through resurfacing and related improvement works.
According to officials familiar with the proposal, discussions are also underway over transferring responsibility for executing the project to the Punjab Communications and Works Department rather than having the municipal corporation directly implement the scheme.
The proposed change in execution responsibility has raised administrative and financial concerns. Officials have pointed to questions surrounding the municipal corporation’s capacity to handle a project of this scale, while also noting that the use of RMC development funds by another department could potentially create audit-related issues.
The matter remains under discussion. Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation Chief Officer Faisal Shehzad said that no final decision had been issued in writing regarding the execution arrangement.
If approved, the proposed programme would represent a significant road infrastructure intervention in Rawalpindi’s inner-city network, with rehabilitation and expansion works planned across 13 roads.
