ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority launched a massive anti encroachment operation in Noorpur Shahan, demolishing nearly 200 houses under heavy police deployment a day after violent clashes with residents escalated tensions in the area.
The operation resumed on Wednesday with full force after authorities had temporarily suspended action due to fierce resistance. Officials said heavy machinery was deployed to clear structures in Noori Bagh Mohallah, completing the demolition without major opposition on the second day.
Meanwhile, police registered a sweeping case against around 350 individuals, including both named and unidentified suspects, invoking serious charges such as attempted murder, rioting, assault on officials and provisions of the Anti Terrorism Act.
According to the First Information Report, groups of armed residents allegedly attacked CDA staff and police using firearms and petrol bombs. Two official vehicles were set ablaze, while several officers were injured during the confrontation, including personnel with gunshot wounds.
Residents, however, strongly disputed the official version, claiming the operation targeted entire neighborhoods without prior arrangements for relocation. They alleged that families were forced out and their belongings removed before bulldozers razed their homes, raising concerns over humanitarian impact.
CDA officials rejected these claims, maintaining that the land falls within Sector F 4 under the Islamabad master plan and was legally acquired decades ago. Authorities insist the operation is part of a broader crackdown on illegal encroachments, signaling a hardline stance on reclaiming state land despite rising public backlash.
