RAWALPINDI: The cost of the Katchery Chowk remodeling project has surged dramatically, with authorities revising the total estimate from Rs14 billion to Rs19 billion, raising fresh concerns over escalating infrastructure expenses in the city. The revised PC I is set to be submitted to the Planning and Development Board for approval within days.

Officials from the Punjab Highway Department confirmed that multiple design and scope changes have driven the sharp increase. Key additions include new pedestrian bridges costing over Rs1.5 billion, expanded land acquisition for road widening, and extensive aesthetic upgrades to underpasses and flyovers.

Authorities said modifications were also made to improve traffic flow, with slight adjustments in road alignments, underpasses, and flyovers. While the overall design remains intact, these refinements aim to ensure smoother and more efficient vehicle movement once the project is completed.

A significant portion of the cost hike is attributed to additional land acquisition, including areas from District Courts, a petrol station on Jhelum Road, Jinnah Park, and private properties. Officials noted that compensation was paid at prevailing market rates, further inflating the project budget.

Environmental and infrastructure improvements have also been incorporated, including horticulture work to enhance the project’s visual appeal and the installation of sump wells to strengthen drainage and prevent waterlogging during rains.

Despite the rising costs, officials maintained that the project remains on track, with over 80 per cent of the work already completed since its launch in October 2025. Authorities insist no further changes will be made, as the revamped Katchery Chowk aims to deliver long-term traffic relief and modern urban infrastructure for Rawalpindi.
