ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Mohsin Naqvi has expressed the government’s intention to develop Islamabad on the pattern of Shanghai, citing the Chinese metropolis as a global benchmark for rapid and well managed urban growth. During a visit to the Shanghai Urban Planning Headquarters, the minister emphasised that immediate steps would be taken to draw lessons from Shanghai’s fast paced development experience.
According to an official communication from the Interior Ministry, Mohsin Naqvi was received by Ms Chen, Head of Shanghai Urban Planning, who briefed him on the city’s comprehensive master planning framework. The briefing covered large scale development projects, integrated infrastructure planning, and the provision of modern public amenities that support sustainable urban living.
The minister was also presented with detailed visual material showcasing Shanghai’s transformation journey. Through videos, digital simulations and physical models, he was informed about the city’s long term master plan, including transport networks, commercial hubs and civic facilities. He also viewed a model of Shanghai’s state of the art stadium, reflecting advanced urban design standards.
Mohsin Naqvi showed keen interest in Shanghai’s centralised and technology driven urban management system, which integrates data across multiple departments for efficient decision making. He praised the city’s integrated governance model, calling it a foolproof system that enhances service delivery and urban resilience.
Describing Shanghai as a leading example of modern urban development, the minister said its progress offers valuable lessons for capitals around the world. He noted that Islamabad could benefit significantly by adopting similar planning principles tailored to local needs. He also recorded his remarks in the visitors book at the planning headquarters.
During his visit to China, Mohsin Naqvi also toured the Shanghai Special Police Force Bureau, where he was briefed on advanced policing systems and equipment. He observed armoured vehicles, bomb disposal tools, water cannons and live training demonstrations, including martial arts performances. Appreciating the force’s high training standards, he said cooperation between the Shanghai and Islamabad police would be further strengthened.
