Oil and Gas Development Company Limited has announced a significant oil and gas discovery in the Nashpa Block located in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, marking a major boost for Pakistan’s indigenous energy resources. The discovery is being described as an important step towards strengthening domestic hydrocarbon supplies and reducing reliance on imported fuels.

In an official statement, OGDCL confirmed successful production from the Baragzai X 1 exploratory well. The well is currently producing 4,100 barrels of oil per day along with 10.5 million cubic feet of gas per day, highlighting its strong commercial potential and immediate contribution to national energy output.

The company said the well was drilled to a depth of 5,170 metres, where a 187 metre hydrocarbon bearing zone was identified in the Datta Formation. A cased hole drill stem test confirmed stable production at a 32 by 64 inch choke, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 3,880 pounds per square inch gauge, indicating robust reservoir characteristics.

OGDCL operates the Nashpa exploration licence with a 65 percent working interest. Pakistan Petroleum Limited holds a 30 percent share, while Government Holdings Private Limited owns the remaining 5 percent. Officials said the partnership structure would ensure efficient development and early monetisation of the discovery.

The latest success builds on an earlier find at the Baragzai X 01 slant well, announced in December 2025. That well was producing 2,280 barrels of oil per day and 5.6 million cubic feet of gas per day from the Kingriali Formation, helping de risk deeper exploration and opening new prospects in the region.

OGDCL said the new discovery reinforces Pakistan’s hydrocarbon potential and supports ongoing efforts to improve energy security. The company is also accelerating its shale gas programme, planning five to six wells in 2026 and 2027. If successful, officials believe the initiative could lead to large scale development and a long term increase in domestic gas production.
