LAHORE: Wapda Chairman Lt Gen Muhammad Saeed (Retd) held a strategic meeting with Liu Huailiang, Chairman of China Gezhouba Group International Engineering Co Ltd, to accelerate progress on the Dasu Hydropower Project, one of Pakistan’s largest hydropower initiatives. The meeting at the Wapda Mega Hydel Projects Complex focused on fast-tracking construction and ensuring timely completion of this critical energy project.
The Dasu Hydropower Project, a major run-of-river scheme on the Indus River in Upper Kohistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is a key component of Pakistan’s long-term energy security. Located seven kilometers upstream of Dasu town, 74 kilometers downstream of the planned Diamer Basha Dam, and 345 kilometers from Islamabad, the project aims to strengthen the national electricity grid.
CGGC International, the main contractor for the project, engaged in detailed discussions with Wapda officials on deploying additional resources and improving on-ground performance. Chairman Wapda stressed the strategic importance of Dasu dam and urged the contractor to maintain momentum to meet the project schedule.
Wapda reaffirmed its commitment to providing full contractual support to ensure timely completion. The dam pit excavation is expected to finish by January 2026, a crucial milestone for Pakistan’s hydropower infrastructure. Authorities are closely monitoring progress to keep the project on track.
Once completed, Dasu Hydropower Project will generate 4,320 megawatts of electricity in two stages. Stage I, currently under construction, will add 2,160 megawatts to the national grid through six units of 360 megawatts each, producing 12,222 gigawatt-hours annually. Stage I is expected to be completed within five years, marking a major boost to Pakistan’s power capacity.
The Dasu Hydropower Project is expected to transform Pakistan’s energy landscape by reducing power shortages, supporting industrial growth, and contributing to sustainable development. Wapda and CGGC remain focused on ensuring the project progresses efficiently to meet the country’s growing electricity demand.
