ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has unveiled a major plan to upgrade the historic GT Road to motorway standards, aiming to transform one of Pakistan’s busiest transport corridors into a safer and more efficient route.
During a high level meeting with the National Highway Authority Punjab Region, the minister directed officials to implement a comprehensive overhaul focused on improving road quality, reducing travel time and enhancing overall connectivity across key industrial zones.
The project will introduce strict regulation of heavy traffic and significant improvements in road infrastructure to ensure smoother flow of vehicles. Authorities have been instructed to match international standards in both construction and maintenance across the entire corridor.
Safety measures remain a top priority, with plans to install modern U turns, protective barriers and dedicated pedestrian facilities. Overhead bridges and walkways will be constructed to prevent accidents and ensure secure movement in high speed areas.
Initial work will begin on critical stretches including Phool Nagar, Okara and Sahiwal, where congestion and accident risks are highest. The phased approach is designed to deliver quick improvements while maintaining traffic continuity.
In addition to functional upgrades, the plan includes beautification through green belts and modern lighting systems. Officials say the initiative will not only improve travel experience but also contribute to economic growth by strengthening one of the country’s most vital road networks.
