RAWALPINDI: Panic gripped commuters on Saturday morning after a Metro bus suddenly caught fire near the busy 6th Road station in Rawalpindi, sending massive clouds of smoke into the sky and disrupting transport operations between Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Although no passengers were injured in the incident, the dramatic blaze created scenes of chaos and concern among people in the surrounding area.
According to rescue officials, the fire erupted while the Metro bus was moving past the 6th Road stop. Rescue 1122 teams quickly reached the location and launched an emergency operation to contain the flames before the situation could worsen. Authorities confirmed that all passengers and staff members managed to get out safely before the vehicle was completely engulfed.
Eyewitnesses described moments of fear as thick black smoke rose high above the city and became visible from a considerable distance. Videos circulating across social media platforms showed the bright red Metro bus consumed by flames while rescue personnel battled the fire with water hoses and emergency equipment. The shocking visuals rapidly spread online and triggered widespread reactions.
Following the incident, Metro services operating between Rawalpindi and Islamabad were temporarily suspended, creating difficulties for thousands of daily commuters who depend on the transport network for work and travel. Officials said services were affected as emergency teams secured the area and assessed the situation.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire. Investigators are expected to examine the vehicle and review technical factors to establish whether mechanical failure, electrical issues, or another cause triggered the incident.
The latest accident has also revived memories of previous Metro bus fire cases in Pakistan. Last year in Lahore, several passengers were injured after jumping from a burning Metro bus, while another major incident in 2021 reportedly destroyed a bus near Minar i Pakistan after a suspected short circuit.
