ISLAMABAD: A dramatic eviction operation at the high profile One Constitution Avenue project was abruptly halted after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif intervened, ordering authorities to suspend all action and form a high level committee to review the matter.

The Islamabad administration and the Capital Development Authority had moved swiftly to vacate the building following a court ruling, issuing short notice to residents and deploying heavy police presence. Families began shifting belongings under pressure, triggering widespread concern and scenes of distress.

Responding to the situation, the prime minister directed officials to immediately stop the operation and ensure no further action is taken until a final decision is reached. A special committee has been constituted to examine all legal, administrative and humanitarian aspects of the case.

The committee, headed by the law minister, includes senior government officials and has been tasked with submitting a comprehensive report within one week. Authorities said affected residents will be given an opportunity to present their concerns before any final decision is made.

The controversy stems from a long standing dispute over the project, originally approved as a five star hotel but later converted into residential apartments. The developer reportedly defaulted on massive financial obligations, leading to cancellation of the lease and subsequent legal battles.

While officials maintain the action was aimed at enforcing the writ of the state, the sudden eviction notices sparked backlash from residents who claim they were given little time despite being bona fide buyers. With the operation now paused, all eyes are on the committee’s findings, which will determine the fate of one of Islamabad’s most contentious real estate projects.
