ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has launched a major infrastructure drive in Gilgit Baltistan as Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan approved an ambitious road development plan aimed at transforming the region into a global tourism hotspot.

The decision was finalised during a high level meeting at the National Highway Authority headquarters, where officials outlined a strategy to upgrade key road networks and improve access to some of the most remote and scenic destinations in the country.

Among the flagship projects is the construction of a 54 kilometer Astore to Chilam Chowki road and a 31 kilometer Skardu to Deosai route. These corridors are expected to significantly reduce travel time, strengthen connectivity and stimulate economic activity across northern areas.

In a major move, the government has approved the upgradation of the iconic Fairy Meadows track. The 12 kilometer stretch from Raikot will be converted into a modern scenic road, with strict instructions that all new roads must have a minimum width of 7.3 meters to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow.

The plan also includes rehabilitation of Upper Kachura, Basho and Shigar roads, along with a 36 kilometer link connecting to the Karakoram Highway. Officials say the focus is on building durable infrastructure capable of withstanding extreme weather while ensuring long term sustainability.

Authorities emphasised close coordination with the Gilgit Baltistan government to accelerate execution. With this large scale overhaul, Pakistan is positioning its northern region as a world class tourism destination, opening new avenues for travel, investment and economic growth.
