ISLAMABAD: A sweeping anti encroachment operation along the Islamabad Expressway has led to the recovery of nearly eight acres of greenbelt land after authorities launched a crackdown against illegal parking sites operating opposite Zia Masjid, signaling a tougher campaign against land misuse in the capital.

Officials said action was taken against six unauthorized parking locations where dozens of vehicles had been occupying public green space in violation of regulations. During the operation, between 60 and 80 vehicles were removed while 15 were impounded, with several taken into custody on site and others shifted to official premises.

Authorities also escalated legal action by registering an FIR against contractors and naming eight individuals allegedly linked to the illegal occupation. Officials described the operation as part of a wider drive to dismantle organized encroachment networks and restore state land that had been commercially exploited.

Following the clearance, environmental restoration work was launched immediately, with plantation activity initiated to revive the damaged greenbelt. Teams have begun rehabilitation of the recovered land, while officials directed urgent fencing of the site to prevent fresh encroachments and protect the corridor from future illegal occupation.

Civic authorities said the operation reflects a broader zero tolerance approach toward misuse of public spaces, particularly along major road corridors where illegal parking and commercial activity have increasingly contributed to congestion, environmental damage and urban disorder.

The recovery of the greenbelt is being viewed as a significant urban enforcement success, combining anti encroachment action with environmental restoration. Officials say similar operations will continue across Islamabad as authorities push to reclaim public land, improve roadside ecology and strengthen protection of the city’s green infrastructure.
